Dr. Michelle Boo (PhD)

Michelle is a fully-registered speech-language therapist with the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) Singapore with more than 15 years of clinical and research experience.

Qualifications

A recipient of the Health Science Scholarship from the Singapore’s Ministry of Health, Michelle graduated with 1st class honours in Speech Pathology from La Trobe University, Australia. She was awarded the President’s Graduate Fellowship and completed her PhD in 2025 at Singapore University of Technology and Design, where her research explored eating-related difficulties in palliative care, and the application of machine learning to dysphagia.

Profile Summary

Michelle has practiced at both Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Singapore General Hospital, working extensively with children and adults with communication and eating-related challenges. She continues to serve in both public and private institutions, where she is actively involved in teaching, supervision, research and clinical practice. 

Clinical Experience

Having worked extensively across acute, rehabilitation and community settings, Michelle is experienced in supporting babies, children and adults with speech, language, feeding, swallowing and cognitive disorders.

In her work with adults, she specialises in managing communication, swallowing and cognitive difficulties arising from neurological and medical conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, motor neuron disease, and head and neck cancer. She also has expertise in tracheostomy management and videofluoroscopy. 

Her paediatric experience includes supporting children with global developmental delays, autism spectrum disorders, speech and language delays, specific language impairment, and apraxia of speech.

Beyond her clinical practice, Michelle continues to supervise and mentor speech-language therapists in both clinical and research settings. She believes in using innovative approaches grounded in sound science, and draws from a wide range of methods to best support each individual.

Research

Michelle previously received the Winston S Rickards Prize Medal awarded to the best paper submitted on therapeutic principles in the field of communication for her paper on aphasia treatment. She has publications in peer-reviewed journals and has participated in various research projects with papers presented at a number of international conferences. 

Dr. Valerie Lim (PhD)

Valerie is an accomplished, compassionate and respected speech language therapist (SLT) with more than 20 years of experience. She is a fully-registered speech-language therapist with the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) Singapore, and is a certified practising speech pathologist with Speech Pathology Australia (SPA).

Qualifications

Valerie graduated with a 1st class honours in a Bachelor of Speech Pathology, and a Masters of Applied Science (Research) degree from La Trobe University, Australia. She obtained her Ph.D in 2007 at the Australian Stuttering Research Centre, University of Sydney where she studied treatment outcomes for bilinguals who stutter. Valerie also has Level 1 Certification in Solution Focused Brief Therapy.

Profile Summary

Valerie worked as a Senior Principal Speech Therapist at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for 16 years before transitioning to private practice. She was a previous Head for the Speech Therapy Department, and was the Lead Clinician for the Fluency team, clinical education and research. Prior to SGH, Valerie worked in community and rehabilitation settings in Singapore and Australia.

In 2015, Valerie was awarded the Singapore National Day Commendation Medal for her conduct, efficiency, and service to the nation and profession.

Clinical Experience

Valerie has extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and adults with disorders of speech, language, voice, fluency, cognition, and swallowing. She also has expertise in tracheostomy management and surgical voice restoration (e.g., artificial laryngeal speech, tracheoesophageal puncture).

Valerie is an experienced clinician with children with speech-language delay and specific language impairment (SLI), ASD, and has worked with children with spinal bifida, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, children with multiple disorders. She is Hanen ITTT trained, and has experience with Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).

Valerie is a recognised stuttering specialist. Trained in a variety of treatment approaches, she has successfully treated numerous children, adolescents and adults who stutter. Valerie is a member of the Lidcombe Program Trainers Consortium, and conducts Lidcombe Program workshops (a fluency treatment program for children who stutter) both locally and internationally. She has also conducted Camperdown Program and Smooth Speech Programs for adolescents and adults using different service delivery models (e.g., individual, group, intensive programs, telehealth).

Valerie is also an established therapist in aphasia (language disorder after stroke). She is the lead author of the English and Mandarin version of the Singapore General Aphasia Test (SGAT), a locally normed test for diagnosing language disorders in individuals following stroke.

Research

Valerie has publications in peer-reviewed journals and books, and holds research grants across different clinical subspecialities. She is a reviewer for several international journals, and regularly presents at local and international conferences.
